Monitoring of pollock and Pacific herring fishing in the sea of Okhotsk

Employees of the Magadan Branch of of the Russian federal research institute of fisheries and oceanography (VNIRO) have begun monitoring the pollock and Pacific herring fishery in the Sea of Okhotsk during the "A" Putin 2024 season.

Two employees of the Magadan branch of VNIRO have been sent to monitor the industrial fishing of pollock and Pacific herring in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk. The work will be carried out on the vessels of RMRS Nikolay Chepik and RTMS Vsevolod Sibirtsev of fishing companies belonging to the Association of Pollock Miners. It is planned to cover the waters of the North Okhotsk, West Kamchatka and Kamchatka-Kuril subzones of the Sea of Okhotsk in the "A" season on fishing vessels. Fishery monitoring provides for the collection of information on the biology and spatial distribution of mass commercial fish species.

The obtained materials will be used to prepare forecasts of the total allowable catches (ODES) of pollock and Pacific herring in the North Okhotomorsky and West Kamchatka subzones, and will also be in demand as part of the development of recommendations for the rational exploitation of their stocks.
