Cooperation between Russia and Africa in the field of fisheries industry development is one of the key topics of the second summit and the Russia–Africa 2023 economic and Humanitarian Forum

The Second Summit and the Russia-Africa 2023 Economic and Humanitarian Forum were held in St. Petersburg. The business program of the events held on the sidelines of the Summit was devoted to discussing strategies for strengthening cooperation between Russia and Africa.

The Russian Federal Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) was represented at the Summit by Deputy Director Ilya Gerashchenko and Deputy Director - Head of the Atlantic Branch of VNIROKonstantin Bandurin.

As part of the business program of the Summit, a session "Effective strategy for cooperation in agriculture" was held, during which issues of developing cooperation in the field of fisheries were discussed, among other things. The participants of the discussion, including Andrey Yakovlev, Deputy Head of Rosrybolovstvo, and Ilya Gerashchenko, Deputy Director of VNIRO, discussed strategic vectors for the development of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Africa in the field of agriculture.

Russian industry science contributes to the provision of competent scientific support for the fishing activities of the countries of the African region. Since the 50s of the last century, scientists of the Atlantic Branch of VNIRO have been carrying out regular research flights to the Central-Eastern Atlantic, as well as carrying out a wide range of monitoring work as scientific observers on fishing vessels in the EEZ of Mauritania.

The main object of scientists' study are massive species of pelagic fish such as sardine, mackerel, European and West African horse mackerel, round and flat sardinella. Scientists identify patterns of distribution of commercial stocks and create recommendations for their rational development in order to optimize fishing and develop export policy.
