VNIRO scientists assessed the condition of the Volgograd reservoir's aquatic bioresources

Specialists from the Saratov branch of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted field field work at the Volgograd reservoir. The purpose of the expedition is comprehensive monitoring of aquatic biological resources and their habitat during the autumn period.

During the research, the institute's staff selected hydrobiological samples (plankton, zooplankton, benthos) and hydrochemical samples — these data will help assess the food supply and conditions in which aquatic organisms live. The scientists paid special attention to ichthyological studies in the lower and middle zones of the reservoir (in areas within the boundaries of the Saratov and Volgograd regions) Net fishing was carried out. Right in the field, experts determined the species of catches, measured the length and weight of fish, and also took samples to determine their age — these materials will be analyzed later in the laboratory. The information collected will make it possible to characterize the species composition of the fish community, as well as to estimate the abundance and biomass of commercial species in key areas of the reservoir.

A separate area of work was the study of commercial invertebrates. In areas typical of crayfish habitat, taking into account the depth and type of soil— scientists have installed crustaceans of various designs. The data obtained will help determine the size and weight characteristics and the relative abundance of crayfish in the lower zone of the reservoir. This information is important for understanding the state of populations and making recommendations for their rational use.

Currently, all the collected materials are undergoing in-house processing in the branch's laboratories. The final results will provide a comprehensive picture of the state of aquatic biological resources and their habitat at the Volgograd reservoir this fall.
