VNIRO research in Saratov and Volgograd reservoirs

Specialists of the Saratov branch of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All—Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted a large-scale survey of the water bodies of the Volga region - the waters of the Saratov and Volgograd reservoirs, as well as small reservoirs of the Saratov region.

The work was carried out within the framework of the State Assignment and industrial environmental monitoring: it was important to understand how human economic activity affects aquatic biological resources and their habitat.

Scientists have studied in detail the areas where sand mining is carried out, hydro-mechanized work is carried out, water intakes are functioning, as well as ichthyological monitoring stations that record the conditions of natural reproduction of fish. Special attention was paid to the places most vulnerable due to the proximity of mineral deposits, as well as channels and backwaters, which suffer the most from anthropogenic impact.

In the course of the research, the specialists not only carried out hydrological measurements and selected hydrobiological and hydrochemical samples to assess the food supply and living conditions of aquatic inhabitants, but also assessed the state of the ichthyofauna using fishing nets, cone traps and a fry seine.

Currently, all the collected materials are undergoing in-house processing in the laboratory of the branch. The results of this painstaking work will help to form a complete picture of the state of aquatic biological resources and their habitat, and will form the basis for further environmental solutions.
