VNIRO improves oyster growing technology

The Pacific branch of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All‑Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) is optimizing the technology of commercial oyster cultivation on the basis of the Center for Collective Use "Innovative Scientific and Production Center of Mariculture on Popov Island".
 
In 2026, in the third decade of August, specialists received juvenile oysters of the T6 (7-8 mm) size category and planted the first batch (40 thousand specimens) in marine cages. Scientists expect that growing larger juveniles will increase their survival rate in winter.
 
Favorable temperatures in the coastal waters of Primorye open up opportunities for the development of oyster aquaculture in new areas.
 
Currently, it takes 16-22 months to grow oysters to marketable size (8 cm, 80 g). Traditional methods have disadvantages: oysters warp, grow to the substrate, and their processing requires a lot of labor. Therefore, the branch's specialists have developed a new technique: the larvae are grown in artificial conditions and deposited in downweller apparatuses on a grain of clam shells. Then the juveniles are raised in the microalgae workshop, and then in upweller machines, where they feed on microalgae and organic slurry.
 
This approach makes it possible to obtain separate oysters that are not fused or attached to the collector.
