VNIRO has completed the research season at Bolshye Donki Lake in the Kurgan region

Specialists of the Ural branch of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) have completed a season of field research on Lake Bolshye Donki (Kurtamyshsky district, Kurgan region) on monitoring aquatic biological resources and their habitat.

The lake is a slightly saline reservoir of suffusion origin with an area of about 11.3 km2 and a depth of up to 3 m. The bowl—shaped basin, muddy bottom, sloping shores, developed coastal vegetation and a mixed type of nutrition create favorable conditions for spawning and feeding fish. The reservoir is a model object for long—term observations of the branch.

During the work, samples of water, phytoplankton, zooplankton and zoobenthos were taken, and control catches were carried out. This makes it possible to assess the quality of the environment, the state of the food supply, the trophic status of the reservoir, the species composition, size and age structure and biomass of fish.

Six species have been recorded in the ichthyofauna of the lake: silver and golden crucian carp, river perch, roach, rotan and pike. The basis of the fishing community consists of crucian carp and perch. The carp has not been noted in recent surveys, the presence of the rattan reflects the trend of expanding its range in the region.

The materials after in-house processing are used to assess the state of the biocenosis, clarify the volume of recommended catch and develop recommendations for the rational use of resources. The results will be included in the summary reports and will be taken into account when forecasting stocks for the coming years.
