VNIRO at the NPAFC meeting

Specialists of the SSC RF "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) as part of the Russian delegation participated in the 33rd annual meeting of the Commission on Anadromous Fishes of the North Pacific Ocean (NPAFC), which took place from May 11 to May 15, 2026 in Vancouver, Canada.

As part of the annual work of the Commission, meetings of three standing committees – scientific, administrative and control - were held, where issues of conservation, study and protection of Pacific salmon in the convention area of the NPAFC were discussed.

At the meetings of the scientific committee, leading scientists from the NPAFC countries analyzed the statistics of Pacific salmon catches. The total catch in 2025 was 745.2 thousand tons, which is 40% higher than in 2024, but remained the lowest for odd-numbered years since 1987. Pink salmon (53.5%), sockeye salmon (22.3%) and chum salmon (21.1%) dominated the catches.

In 2026, comprehensive studies of Pacific salmon are planned in the Convention area, which will focus on migration timing, abundance, distribution and survival.

A new President of the Commission was elected at the annual meeting. Vladimir Belyaev, Advisor to the Director of VNIRO, took over this post. The participants thanked Jamal Moss (USA) for his fruitful work over the past two years.

Nanaimo (British Columbia, Canada) will be the venue for the NPAFC annual meeting in 2027.

For reference: NPAFC is an international intergovernmental organization approved on the basis of the Convention on the Conservation of Anadromous Fish Stocks in the North Pacific Ocean dated February 11, 1992.
