Victoria Shcherbakova: "I want to save sturgeons!"

Leading specialist of the Department of Molecular Genetics of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) Victoria Shcherbakova successfully defended her PhD thesis in the specialty 1.5.7 — Genetics at the Institute of Developmental Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The topic of the work is "The population and genetic structure of some sturgeon species and the genetic monitoring of their artificial reproduction."

In her research, Victoria Shcherbakova focused on the most important issues on which the future of rare fish species largely depends. The scientist has studied in detail the population and genetic structure of sturgeons, whose numbers are at a critical level today. Among the key achievements are new data on the species structure and intraspecific differentiation of populations of Russian sturgeon, beluga and sterlet. Of particular scientific value is the comparison of the natural population of the Ural thorn with aquaculture herds: such comparisons help to more accurately build artificial reproduction programs and preserve the genetic diversity of species.

The thesis defense became a bright stage in Victoria's nine—year scientific career at VNIRO - her work makes a real contribution to solving fundamental problems of sturgeon conservation.

Congratulations on your well-deserved success!
