TINRO Graduate Trainees: from practice to science

On July 10, 2026, Ekaterina Golubeva and Ilya Karbainov, specialists of the Laboratory of Commercial Oceanography of the Pacific Branch of the SSC RF "All—Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO), received red diplomas at the FEFU Institute of the World Ocean.

Their professional journey began a year ago with a "Research Internship" at the branch, a program that gives students an immersion in the real scientific environment and helps them form a portfolio even before graduation.

During the internship, graduates underwent "marine training": they participated in research voyages on the ships TINRO, Professor Kaganovsky and Hokku Maru, and monitored the hydrological parameters of coastal waters.

Ekaterina Golubeva participated in the 2025 summer expedition to Yuzhno-‑The Kuril region, where dramatic changes in ocean conditions were recorded, affecting the catch of the Far Eastern sardine. She has mastered the full cycle of work — from in situ measurements to the preparation of analytical materials, which formed the basis of her final qualifying work.

Ilya Karbainov established himself as a specialist in hydrology: he continued monitoring in the Sports Harbor of Vladivostok, analyzed the data and prepared the manuscript of a scientific article. Ilya also became the author of the hydrological part of the voyage report on the results of the Russian‑Japanese expedition to NIS Hokku Maru.

The VNIRO team congratulates Ekaterina and Ilya on completing their bachelor's degree and wishes them success in their master's degree, new discoveries and scientific achievements.
