On May 14, the Volga-Caspian branch of VNIRO hosted the First regional stage of the Championship, held on the Volga-Caspian Sea shipping Channel below the village of Sergiyevka in the Ikryaninsky district of the Astrakhan region.
This year, the event took place on dates that were not very favorable and late for fishing, which, due to the large amount of water, low temperatures and high water levels, at first made it doubtful of success. However, the competition was successful, and the spirit of competition and excitement was especially emphasized in it.
Amateur fishing was conducted in full compliance with the Fishing Rules for the Volga-Caspian Fishery Basin and other regulations. Fishing was carried out by all participants on bottom fishing rods, the device of which corresponded to the Rules of fishing. The catches were very diverse. During the competition, a total of 33 specimens of aquatic biological resources were extracted, including roach, gustera, chehon, bersh, and crayfish, which were counted as catches of experimental catches and released into their natural habitat.
The observers recorded the result of each participant, estimating the number, species composition and size of catches. The results of the competition were evaluated by a competent panel of judges.
The fishing competition lasted more than the prescribed 2 hours, as several fishermen literally went toe-to-toe for two additional halves. According to the results of the fishing, Nikita Myagny, a senior specialist at the laboratory of river and semi-navigable fish, became the absolute winner. His catch was 8 specimens of aquatic biological resources. The largest chehon fish, 31 cm long and weighing 270 grams, was caught by leading engineer Andrey Zhatkin.
