This expedition at the end of April traditionally marks the opening of the salmon laboratory field season and is an important and integral part of the annual scientific research conducted by the branch's specialists.
Laboratory staff conducted monitoring of feeding conditions for juvenile Pacific salmon. The collection of hydrobiological and ichthyological samples makes it possible to assess the background conditions and the state of the feed resources of the Bolshoy River basin in anticipation of seasonal flood events and the mass decline of juvenile Pacific salmon.
Benthic invertebrates in drift were studied at control stations to assess the food supply of juveniles. Simultaneously with the drift fishing, the scientists measured the depth of the river, the speed of the current and the temperature of the water and air, collected quantitative benthos samples from the bottom of the reservoir, and at the sampling sites, juvenile salmon were caught with a seine.
