The Middle Volga branch of VNIRO contributes to the restoration of the sturgeon population

Specialists of the Srednevolzhsky branch of the SSC RF "All—Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) are actively involved in the artificial reproduction of aquatic biological resources - their work helps replenish stocks of sturgeon in the lower reaches of the Volga.

Under the guidance of Sergey Morgunov, an experienced ichthyologist and fish breeder, head of the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Reclamation, specialists carry out important technological operations, on which the future of valuable fish species largely depends.

At the end of June, specialists performed a bonus check of juvenile Russian sturgeon in the growing ponds. The results are impressive: 1.7 million juveniles with an average weight of 2.8 g were obtained from 12 ponds. Now the team has the following task — to release the fry into the Volga.

Such annual releases within the framework of the state task are a key element of the program for the restoration of populations of passing sturgeon and sterlet. The goal is to bring their numbers to the level typical of the fishing performance of the 1960s and 1990s. VNIRO's work is a real contribution to the preservation of the Volga's unique natural heritage.
