Monitoring of migrations and fish stocks in the Taz River

Specialists of the Laboratory of Fisheries Ecology of the Tyumen branch of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All—Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted comprehensive monitoring in the Taz River, the second largest river in Western Siberia, whose length exceeds 1400 km.

The research covered the 120th kilometer from the mouth: scientists studied the spawning and wintering migration of whitefish and the feeding and wintering migration of partial ones.

The material for analysis was selected from commercial catches: the specialists carried out mass measurements of 5,151 individuals and conducted a biological analysis of 344 fish, which made it possible to determine the size, age and sex structures of the populations. Zooplankton, zoobenthos, and phytoplankton samples were taken to assess the food supply; in parallel, the hydrological regime and distribution of fish in the floodplain system and riverbed were monitored.

An important area of work was the replenishment of the bank of genetic data of whitefish in the European part of Russia and Siberia — 100 new fin tissue samples were taken from the Taz River. Since the basin plays a key role in the reproduction of valuable Siberian species (pelage, whitefish, and chira), the data obtained will help assess the state of aquatic bioresources and make sound recommendations for their capture.

After processing the materials, scientists will provide reliable information about fish populations and their habitat.
