XIV RUSSIAN-NORWEGIAN SYMPOSIUM OF FISHERIES

11-13 August 2009
VNIRO
Moscow - Russia

The theme of the Symposium: The Kamchatka red king crab in the Barents Sea and its effect on the ecosystem of the Barents Sea.

The Kamchatka red king crab was introduced in the Barents Sea in the 1960-s. At present the Barents Sea population of this species became one of the most numerous in the world. This artificially created population with a large range is found far from the native habitation sites, in environment different from that of the donor populations. The views about the species numbers and its dynamics are most important for understanding of the processes of its adaptation to new conditions of living, and of its influence on the indigenous fauna. In view of the current importance of the red king crab for fisheries, and of the need to study the ecological effect on the Barents Sea biota resulting from the introduction of this active benthos eater, the 37th session of the Joint Russian-Norwegian Fisheries Commission recognized the need for a comprehensive review of the knowledge accumulated in the biology, ecology and economic utilization of this species introduced in the Barents Sea.

Given below are the principal subjects to be discussed at the symposium:

  1. Increase in red king crab stocks, and expansion of their range in the Barents Sea:
    • crab distribution range and its expantion;
    • variations in abundance;
    • expansion mechanisms;
    • stock assessment and forecast techniques.
  2. Adaptation to new habitats:
    • impact on the new ecosystem;
    • behavior of the red king crab in its new area;
    • reproduction and stock recruitment;
    • food resource and habitat conditions for red king crab in its new area;
    • aquaculture of the red king crab.
  3. Significance of the red king crab for the fishing industry in the Barents Sea region:
    • development and history of the king crab fishery;
    • incidental catch of the red king crab;
    • development of new fishing gears
    • ;
    • socio-economic impact.
  4. King crab fishery management in the Barents sea:
    • history of the Russian king crab fishery;
    • history of the Norwegian king crab fishery;
    • disputes in the fisheries for the red king crab as an introduced species.
  5. The snow crab Chionetes opilio in the Barents Sea
    • relations between the red king crab and the other introduced species / snow crab;
    • distribution, extension of the range and biology of snow crab.

Abstracts

A volume of collected abstracts will be published by the beginning of the symposium. Abstracts and papers on any of the above aspects of biology, ecology and harvesting of the red king crab and snow crab in the Barents Sea are welcome. Presentations may be in the form of poster, or oral. You should indicate your preference on the format of presentation. Abstracts are required both for the oral and poster presentations.
Abstract must be submitted in English. Responsibility for the contents of the abstracts rests with the author.
