Within the framework of the UN conference, scientists discussed issues of conservation of the World Ocean

The Second UN Conference on the theme "Strengthening ocean conservation efforts based on science and innovation within the framework of the 14th Sustainable Development Goal: Situation analysis, Partnerships and Solutions" was held in Lisbon (Portugal).

The delegation of the Russian Federation was headed by the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriev. Vladimir Belyaev, Deputy Director for Science, Doctor of Biological Sciences, took part in the conference on behalf of VNIRO.

The discussion was aimed at finding scientifically sound and innovative solutions to stimulate global actions for the conservation of the world's oceans. The event, in particular, discussed the prevention of marine pollution, as well as minimizing and eliminating the consequences of acidification, deoxygenation and ocean warming.

In addition, the participants considered the possibilities of expanding joint research programs and the exchange of scientific technologies in the framework of improving the conservation and rational use of the resource base of the World Ocean.

As a result of the conference, the Declaration "Let's save our Ocean" was adopted. The document was developed in accordance with the current norms of international law and is an act of a recommendatory nature. Its provisions fully reflect the current trends in the development of world fisheries and aquaculture.

The Declaration notes the need to preserve and sustainably use the oceans and their resources through the application of international law, reflected in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Also noteworthy is the provision of the Declaration, which emphasizes the importance of the work carried out by the UN intergovernmental conference on an international legally binding document regulating measures for the conservation and use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
