VNIRO specialists have started monitoring Pacific salmon using unmanned aerial vehicles

Employees of the Sakhalin branch of VNIRO have started implementing the "Program of state monitoring of Pacific salmon in the water bodies of the Sakhalin Region in 2022-2023" using unmanned aerial vehicles.

To date, a survey of 5 rivers in the south-east of Sakhalin Island has been conducted. The first approaches of pink salmon to some rivers of Poronai and Dolinsky districts are estimated. Groups have been prepared to assess the biological condition of producers in the main areas of reproduction.

A survey of the Dolinsky district rivers showed the presence of pink salmon in the Dudinka, Firsovka and Chernaya rivers. The number of producers is still low and is less than 0.1 copies /m2. The intensity of fish entering these rivers is estimated from 50 to 300 copies / hour. In the future, with the approach of the bulk of the fish (beginning- mid-August), the intensity of the approach should increase and the rivers will fill up much faster.
