VNIRO scientists took part in the discussion of the problem of microplastics in the Arctic

A conference on waste and the problem of microplastics in the Arctic was held in Arkhangelsk at the site of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M. V. Lomonosov. The conference is one of the events implemented within the framework of Russia's chairmanship in the Arctic Council.

The sessions, which covered various aspects of the environmental agenda, considered the prospects for the implementation of the national project "Ecology" in the Arctic region, as well as ways to eliminate pollution associated with the spread of synthetic polymer particles in the oceans.

VNIRO was represented at the conference by the leading researcher of the Department of Marine and Freshwater Fishes of Russia, PhD, Andrey Pedchenko. His report "Results of studies of microplastic pollution of the Arctic Ocean seas" introduced the conference participants to the data obtained during large-scale research by scientists of the Institute in the Arctic seas for the three-year period 2019-2021.

The work carried out by VNIRO scientists is aimed at developing effective solutions to the problem of marine debris pollution of unique aquatic ecosystems.
