More than 165 million whitefish species have been replenished by the forces of fisheries science in the Ob-Irtysh basin

Scientists and fish breeders of the Tyumen branch of VNIRO have released whitefish juveniles grown in the fish breeding area "Lake Vanzetursky Sor" into the natural habitat.

The accounting of juveniles and control weighings were supervised by the profile state commission, which included representatives of the Nizhneobsky TU Rosrybolovstvo, the Nizhne-Ob branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Glavrybvod", the Service for Control and Supervision in the Field of Environmental Protection, Wildlife and Forest Relations in Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug — Yugra, the Department of Industry of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug-Yugra.

Vanzetursky Sor Lake is a large fish–breeding pond with an area of almost 500 hectares . It has created optimal conditions for the effective cultivation of whitefish species – it is a good food base, a small depth, a high level of oxygen saturation of water.

VNIRO specialists carried out the stocking of the reservoir in mid-May. In recent years, fish farmers have been using helicopters to deliver larvae to the lake – this reduces the transportation time by 8 times. As a result, the survival rate of the larva increases significantly, and adaptation to new natural conditions is easier and faster. Throughout the growth period, fish farmers controlled the dynamics of the development of juveniles, monitored the food supply, temperature and gas conditions in the water. 2 months later, by the time of release, the whitefish juveniles have successfully gained the optimal weight, which will allow them to adapt to living in a natural environment.

According to the results of the control accounting, the profile commission approved the release of fish. From the fish-breeding site "Lake Vanzetursky Sor" in 2022, 55.6 million units were released. muksun, 2.1 million pieces of nelma, 7.5 million pieces of peled.

Similar measures for the registration and release of juveniles were held at the fish breeding site "Lake Aitor". In total, in 2022, fish breeders of the Tyumen branch of VNIRO produced more than 165 million whitefish, of which 75.6 million individuals of muksun, 11.9 million units of nelma and 77.5 million individuals of pelage. Moreover, most of the juveniles were released at the expense of the institute's own funds. Thus, fisheries science contributes to the restoration of the population of fish species important for Western Siberia.

The painstaking work of scientists and fish farmers of VNIRO provides compensation for anthropogenic damage to the environment and makes a significant contribution to the conservation of the biodiversity of the Ob-Irtysh basin.
