The great Amur scientific expedition will start in 2020

Scientists of the all-Russian research Institute of fisheries and Oceanography are planning comprehensive studies of the Amur river living resources.

In 2019, in accordance with the decision of the Russian Federal Agency for Fishery VNIRO worked out a Program for the development of fisheries research in freshwater water bodies of the Russian Federation in 2020-2024.

The 5-year plan of the subprogram "Fish of the Amur River basin", which is part of the Program, includes five expeditions: Verkhneamurskaya (the Amur River upstream from Khabarovsk); Nizhneamurskaya (the Amur River from Khabarovsk to Nikolaevsk-on-Amur); Ussuri-Khankai (the Ussuri river and the lake Khanka) and the Amur estuary expedition covering the entire area of the Amur estuary and its tributaries).

Currently, ichthyological studies in the Amur basin are conducted under monitoring program, which allows us to assess the current state of the main commercial fishing stocks (Pacific salmon, smelt, residential freshwater fish species) and provide scientific advice for their rational use and conservation. However, ongoing climate changes and increasing anthropogenic impact require additional scientific efforts in monitoring, understanding and forecasting the changes in aquatic ecosystems of the Amur River basin.

Aquatic ecosystems of the Amur River basin are affected by a growing number of anthropogenic factors, including the growth of local population, industrial and agricultural development, IUU fishing, construction activities etc. To meet these challenges, it is necessary to conduct a full-scale ecological and fisheries research in the Amur river basin including  a number of expeditions for the next five years. The expedition plans implies the use of modern technical tools such as aerial surveys from drones and quadrocopters, remote video recording, hydroacoustic surveys, radio taggin etc.

The researches will cover all principal components of the aquatic ecosystems: phyto-, zoo - and ichthyoplankton, zoo- and phyto-benthos, ichthyocen and aquatic mammals. Monitoring of the spawning rivers and salmon spawning areas will be an important part of the program. One of the objectives of the Program is to provide scientific support for Russian-Chinese cooperation in conservation of the Amur River aquatic ecosystem and its fishery resources.

The results obtained will help to improve existing management of aquatic biological resources, the development of sustainable fisheries and the organization of an effective fishing complex in the Amur basin at the present stage.
