A joint Russian-Norwegian multi-species trawl-acoustic survey has begun on a research vessel "Vilnius"

On January 18, 2022, the scientific research vessel (NIS) "Vilnius" with a scientific group consisting of scientists from the Russian Federal Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography went to sea to participate in the "winter" stage of the annual multi-species trawl-acoustic survey to assess bottom fish stocks of the Barents Sea.

The work will be carried out in the exclusive economic zone, on the continental shelf of Russia and in the open part of the Barents Sea.

Norwegian research vessels of the Bergen Institute of Marine Research ("Helmer Hanssen" and "Johan Hjort") are taking part in the expedition, they will cover the economic zone of Norway and the Area of the Svalbard archipelago.

During the survey, scientists will determine the thermal state of the sea, collect materials for assessing stocks of benthic and pelagic species of commercial fish, aquatic invertebrates, mammals and birds, investigate the infestation of commercial aquatic organisms with potentially dangerous parasites for humans, the occurrence of pathologies and diseases of fish and invertebrates, take samples to study pollution of commercial aquatic organisms and their habitat.

The expedition will be completed in late February-early March 2022. The materials obtained will be used to assess stocks and predict the future allowable withdrawal of commercial fish and invertebrates.
